One of the most significant literary funerals I have had the privilege of photographing took place at Golders Green Crematorium in Barnet — the memorial service of Andrea Levy, author of Small Island and one of the most important British-Jamaican writers of her generation.
Andrea's father was among the first passengers on the Empire Windrush in 1948. Her work gave voice to the Caribbean experience in Britain in a way that few writers have matched. I photographed her memorial service with the same quiet, documentary approach I bring to every service — present, unobtrusive, and focused entirely on what was happening in the room.
