Background

In February 2024, I was asked to provide funeral live streaming for the funeral of a much-loved father, husband, and community figure. The service took place at Haddon Hall Baptist Church in London, followed by the committal at Honor Oak Crematorium.

The family wanted to ensure that relatives, friends, and colleagues around the world could take part in the farewell. Many were based in Nigeria, the United States, Canada, and Sierra Leone, and unable to travel at short notice. For them, Nigerian funeral streaming was the only way to feel connected, grieve together, and share in the traditions that make these ceremonies so meaningful.

On the day, over 545 devices across four continents logged into the private stream. For those thousands of miles away, it meant they could experience every prayer, tribute, and song in real time.

Challenge

Nigerian funerals are renowned for their scale and cultural richness, with large congregations, heartfelt music, and extended family involvement. This service presented several key challenges:

  • Large congregation: The church was filled with mourners, meaning camera placement had to be discreet yet comprehensive.

  • Multiple locations: The service at Haddon Hall was followed by the committal at Honor Oak Crematorium, requiring careful planning and quick transitions.

  • Global audience: With over 500 viewers expected across several countries, internet stability had to be flawless.

  • Cultural importance: Nigerian funerals often blend solemn reflection with joyous celebration of life. Capturing both with sensitivity was essential.

Approach

Preparation and setup

I arrived at Haddon Hall three hours before the service, allowing plenty of time to set up cameras, lay cables securely, and test internet connections. Working closely with Albins Funeral Directors, who managed the proceedings, I was able to coordinate timings and ensure everything ran smoothly.

Multi-camera coverage

Two professional cameras were used:

  • Wide camera to capture the congregation, the entrance of the coffin, and the atmosphere of the church.

  • Close camera to focus on tributes, readings, and music, ensuring those online could see expressions and emotion clearly.

This approach allowed viewers to experience both the scale of the day and the intimacy of family moments.

Audio

Clear sound is vital in services filled with music, singing, and spoken tributes. I placed microphones on the minister, at the lectern, and around the church to capture both speech and congregational singing. Switching between microphones during the stream meant that online viewers heard each part clearly, from prayers to hymns.

Connectivity

To serve a truly international audience, I relied on four bonded 4G/5G internet connections. This ensured stability, even in areas of weak coverage, allowing viewers in Nigeria, the US, and beyond to watch without interruption.

The Service

The funeral reflected the richness of Nigerian culture and faith.

  • Coffin arrival: The coffin was carried in with dignity, greeted by solemn prayers and emotional family presence.

  • Inside the church: Hymns and gospel songs filled the space, with tributes from children, friends, and community members. The pastor led the service with warmth, weaving together scripture and memories.

  • Family tributes: Loved ones spoke of a man who touched many lives, remembered for his generosity, faith, and devotion to family.

  • Cultural expression: The service blended moments of deep sorrow with uplifting music — a true celebration of life as well as a farewell.

At Honor Oak Crematorium

After the service, the cortege travelled to Honor Oak Crematorium. Here, family and close friends gathered for the committal. The final prayers and photo tribute were live streamed, ensuring those abroad could witness the final act of remembrance.

Even at this quieter, more intimate stage, the stream remained a bridge between continents, allowing loved ones to join in collective mourning.

The Finale

The committal concluded with final prayers and blessings, as mourners gathered around the coffin in silent respect. For those watching abroad, the stream provided closure, giving them a chance to say their goodbyes.

What made this service especially powerful was its global reach. Over 545 viewers from Lagos, Texas, Sierra Leone, Canada, and beyond joined simultaneously, showing how funeral live streaming can dissolve distance and unite communities.

Outcome

The family received:

  • A full HD recording of both the church service and the committal.

  • A private live stream link available for 12 months.

  • A downloadable copy to keep permanently.

The family later told me how much comfort it gave them to know that relatives across the world had been able to take part. The live stream didn’t just share the service — it preserved the memory of a life well lived.
