A Zimbabwean Funeral Live Streamed from Pimlico

I provided the funeral live streaming for a Zimbabwean funeral at the Church of the Holy Apostles on Cumberland Street in Pimlico, central London.

The church was full. Family and congregation were in traditional dress — rich pinks and reds. There was African singing as the coffin was carried in, a viewing where people paid their respects, then hymns, readings and tributes. The stream had to carry the music and the room, not just a speaker at a lectern.

571 people watched live across nine countries, including the UK, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Poland, the Netherlands, the United States, Jersey, Hungary and Switzerland.

That is why funeral live streaming matters for a service like this. A large part of the family could not get to London. The viewing page let them take part as it happened, then watch the recording afterwards.

Streaming a service like this

I used two cameras and dedicated microphones so people online could follow the singing, the viewing and the tributes. When a coffin is carried in with singing, a single wide shot from the back of the church is not enough. You need the room and the faces. You need the sound of the singing as it actually was in the building, not a phone mic two pews back.

Guests watched on a viewing page shared by the family. No app. No account. After the service the same link was used for the recording, which stays online for 3 months, with a downloadable HD copy for the family.

I regularly cover Zimbabwean, African and Caribbean funerals where relatives are watching from several countries at once. The work is the same technically. The day is not. These services run longer, move more, and ask more of the audio.

Funeral streaming in Pimlico and Westminster

Holy Apostles sits in a dense part of Westminster. Churches here are busy, access is tight, and the congregation often includes people who have flown in and people who could not. A stream is not an extra in that situation. It is how the family stay in the same funeral.
